Lost dog or cat — what to do?

When a pet goes missing, time matters. Here is what to do straight away and how FeliCan helps: a “Lost” poster with a QR code in a minute and a microchip registered in a database.

The first hours

  • Search close by. Walk the route of the last walk and the area around your home, calling calmly. Cats often hide nearby — check basements, garages, sheds and bushes, also at your neighbours' (with their permission).
  • Have someone stay at home — your pet may come back on its own.
  • Call shelters and vet clinics in the area. Give a description, the microchip number and your phone number. Found animals often end up there, and a vet or shelter will read the microchip.
  • Report the loss to your local authority if in your area it takes care of found animals.
  • Tell your neighbours and local groups — post a photo and the link to your pet's profile in neighbourhood groups and noticeboards.

A “Lost” poster in a minute

On your pet's page in FeliCan click “Lost” poster. Choose a clear photo (just the animal, face well visible), enter the date and place it went missing, its appearance, collar, temperament (e.g. “shy, do not chase”) and your phone number. You get an A4 page to print or save as PDF. We do not store the poster data.

If your pet has its public profile switched on, the poster shows a QR code and a short address felican.eu/name — anyone who sees the poster can open more photos on their phone. The same link is easy to share on social media.

The microchip — the most important protection

A vet or a shelter identifies a microchipped animal within seconds — provided the number is registered in a database and the contact details are up to date. A microchip without registration does not help. In FeliCan the “Register the microchip in DogWorldBase” button on your pet's page carries its details over to the form of the international DogWorldBase registry; the entry and the fee are handled by DogWorldBase. The microchip number and your details are never public — neither in FeliCan nor on the pet's profile.

Found an animal with a microchip? On dogworldbase.com enter the 15-digit number and the site shows which registry holds it and how to contact them. Any vet or shelter can read the number.

Prepare before anything happens

  • Register the microchip in a database and check that the phone number in the registry is current.
  • Add a few recent photos to FeliCan: from the front, from the side and of any distinctive markings.
  • Fill in the colour on your pet's page, and its size, collar and temperament in the notes — under stress it is easy to forget something.
  • Switch on the public profile if you want the QR code on the poster to lead to photos. The profile is off by default and does not appear in search engines until you tick that option.

When your pet is found

Take down the posters and ads, and let the shelters, clinics and groups you contacted know. After such an adventure it is a good idea to have your pet checked by a vet.
